Stone and brick construction

In Vieux-Quebec, Saint-Roch and the older parts of Limoilou, interior walls are frequently stone or double brick, which attenuates a 5 GHz signal severely. A router two rooms away can leave a television with a connection too weak to hold a live stream, even though speed tests near the router look excellent.

This produces a characteristic pattern: the connection is fast on a phone in the same room as the router and unreliable on the television at the far end of the apartment. The fix is physical rather than technical, and it is usually an Ethernet run, a powerline adapter or a mesh node rather than a faster internet plan.

Winter and infrastructure

Quebec City winters are harder on outdoor infrastructure than Montreal's, and connections that depend on aerial lines occasionally degrade during ice storms and heavy snow. This affects everything on your connection, not television specifically, but it is worth knowing that a February outage is more likely to be a line issue than a service issue.
